At CES 2022, AMD announced the fight to Intel with the presentation of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to counterbalance the 12th Core generation CPUs , in particular the 12900K, in the first half of 2022.

it was previously speculated that AMD would unveil 3D variants of the 5900X and 5950X processors, as a prototype of the 5900X had previously been demonstrated by AMD. According to Digitimes, a Taiwanese electronics magazine, manufacturer restrictions are said to have thwarted these plans, which is why it ended up being "only" the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

According to information from Digitimes , semiconductor manufacturer TSMC's 3D SoIC technology is not yet in mass production, while the prevailing small capacity is reserved for enterprise chips. In Chunan, in TSMC's homeland of Taiwan, a packaging plant is currently under construction and is expected to start work this year. However, it is questionable whether this will end in favor of the mass production of AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D, since Zen 4 is knocking later in the year.

AMD hopes to achieve a significant boost in gaming performance with the addition of L3 cache. The idea is to reduce access to the DRAM, which should primarily benefit latency-sensitive applications such as games. AMD states that this technology should result in 15 percent more performance, which would place the Ryzen 7 5800X3D ahead of the Core i9-12900K .

However, the problem of limited production capacity still remains. If this is not solved by the middle of the year, AMD's "fastest gaming CPU", which should be available in the spring, could become a niche CPU, since the supposed replacement of Zen 4 CPUs is imminent in the same year.

Calls for AMD CPU price cuts

In the course of the announcement of the 5800X3D, there is a discussion on Reddit that the prices of the current line-up would have to be reduced by around 100 dollars, otherwise the race against Intel would be lost. The post's creator notes that even if the Ryzen 7 5800X3D were actually the fastest CPU, a Core i7-12700F , priced at $314 according to the Reddit user, would still outperform the competition.

AMD now has to return to reality and realize that they are facing real competition, they say. The 5800X3D should therefore approach the price of the 5800X and large price reductions are also necessary for the remaining models. It remains to be seen how the prices of the CPUs will ultimately develop over the course of the year.
